A birth chart, or Kundli in Vedic astrology, is essentially a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It maps out where all the celestial bodies — the Sun, Moon, and planets — were positioned relative to your birth location. This cosmic blueprint holds the key to understanding your personality, strengths, challenges, and life path.
The birth chart is divided into 12 houses, each representing different areas of life. The 1st house (Ascendant or Lagna) represents your self and personality. The 7th house governs partnerships and marriage. The 10th house rules career and public reputation. Understanding which planets occupy which houses gives you insight into where your energies are concentrated.
In Vedic astrology, we work with nine planets (Navagraha): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Each planet has specific significations — the Sun represents ego and authority, the Moon governs emotions and mind, Mars rules energy and courage, and so on.
Your Ascendant (Lagna) is the most important point in your chart. It determines the layout of all 12 houses and colors how you present yourself to the world. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth becomes your Ascendant sign.
To get started with reading your chart, identify your Ascendant sign, then look at which planets sit in which houses. Pay special attention to your Moon sign (your emotional nature), Sun sign (your core identity), and the rulers of key houses like the 1st, 7th, and 10th.
